What is Presbyopia?
We are all born with a lens in our eyes. When we’re young, the lens is clear and flexible. This flexibility of the lens allows it to change shape very easily. This is what makes it fairly easy for us to focus on things far away and things that are close to us.
As we get older, the lens gradually loses its flexibility. It becomes more stiff and more cloudy with time. The stiffness of the lens makes it more difficult to see things up close. This is called Presbyopia.
Presbyopia usually starts shortly after age 40. Patients typically find themselves holding reading materials farther away in order to see them clearly.
Presbyopia can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or eye surgery.
