ME’JA DAY, MD
BOARD CERTIFIED COMPREHENSIVE OPHTHALMOLOGIST & CATARACT SURGEON
Dr. Me’Ja Day’s journey to becoming an ophthalmologist started in a small town called Pearson, Georgia. She had a brilliant start as valedictorian of her high school class. As a trailblazer in higher education, Dr. Day had complete freedom to choose her own path. She chose to attend Spelman College majoring in Biochemistry. She also entered the strong premed program at Spelman. After her second year at Spelman, she participated in the Summer Medical Education Program (SMEP) at Yale University School of Medicine. This program allowed undergraduate students to become immersed in medical student life. It was at Yale that Dr. Day made the decision to become a physician.
As a student at Morehouse School of Medicine, most of Dr. Day’s first shadowing experiences were in the emergency room and the trauma bay at Grady Hospital. During her third year rotations, Dr. Day recalls following a patient that was admitted with multiple gunshot wounds requiring multiple procedures. One of the procedures was an eye surgery, and Dr. Day was absolutely fascinated. She immediately began to learn all she could about it, spending much of her extra time in the Grady/Emory Eye Clinic and falling in love with eye surgery. As a result, she chose to specialize in ophthalmology. She was chosen to complete the Visiting Clerkship Program at Harvard University while training at Boston Children’s Hospital and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Day went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Morehouse School of Medicine. She completed a transitional year program internship at Spartanburg Regional Hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina, followed by ophthalmology residency training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans.
Dr. Day performs comprehensive exams as well as cataract surgeries and minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries. About cataract surgery, she says, “It’s the surgery that I absolutely love. I love everything about it. All the steps are like a dance. It’s very graceful and meticulous. I love the artistry of it. But the thing I love most is the patient interactions. Oftentimes you get patients who don’t see well. You remove their cataract, and they come back for their postoperative appointments and literally have a different view of the world. I love being able to give that to them.”
Dr. Day lives in McDonough with her husband and two daughters. In her spare time, she enjoys community service, volunteering, and mentoring the youth. She loves traveling and is looking forward to traveling the world with her family.
